As an online trading community our goal is to collect the entire 6600 base card 2008 Upper Deck Yankee Stadium Legacy set. We will then auction the set on eBay and donate the proceeds to the "The V Foundation" (for cancer research).

http://sports.upperdeck.com/baseball/yankeestadium/

Information about our benefitting charity:

www.jimmyv.org

How can I help? I am glad you asked! As we are collecting this to donate the proceeds to charity, we ask that any members who are interested in helping to donate any cards they pull to the cause. As a site we hope to eventually be able to trade duplicate cards we recieve for cards we need, however we will be unable to buy single cards form members. The cards will be seeded 1 in every 4 packs of Upper Deck cards across all 8 UD brands this year. Even if you personally do not open any UD product this year, you can still help. As we all make trades with each other and across the internet, if you have a deal where your trade partner needs a little more in trade to make the deal even but they have nothing else of your wants, pick up one or two of these cards for The Bench!

***As an added bonus for you for donating cards, the MOD team will be holding a drawing/contest. You will get one drawing for every card you donate to the set. There will be one big prize and two smaller prize packages consisting of Auto and GU cards!***

I have already been in contact with Upper Deck, Beckett, Tuff Stuff, Major League Baseball, the New York Yankees, ESPN, Sports Illustrated, and the V Foundation about cross promoting the project and hopefully gaining us some national exposure! We also have a couple of card shops commited to donating any cards they pull as well!

I am the official media contact for the project. Matt (Meliah) has volunteered to be the official "keeper of the cards." Robert (Rburke02) has volunteered to help and we are asking Frank (The Quarter Box) if he would also like to help as this is his original idea.

Here is the MySpace page I created for the project:
http://www.myspace.com/thebenchyankeestadiumset

Here is the link to the official proect website.
http://www.thebenchtrading.com/thebench/yankeestadiumset.html

Again this is a huge 7500 card set and we need your help in completing it! If you have any questions or you would like to help beyond donating cards please contact me. Lets show the world what The Bench can do and help make a nice donation to a worthwhile charity. Start sending your cards to Meliah!

I'm hoping to see our community come together to get this done! I believe it is an extremely possible set to be done, no matter how huge it is. All of us open enough packs to pull these and even if you're planning on putting the set together (Like I am), you can still contribute by sending whatever doubles you come across in pulls or trades.

Thanks to Frank (for the idea!), Tim (for the marketing), Matt (for holding the cards) and Robert for all their help!

I haven't heard anything in a little while about this, and didn't know if it would get off the ground. Needless to say, I am very excited about it.

I will, of course, help in any way I can. Just LMK what you would like me to do.

I have a couple of ideas to promote this project at some shows, including the two I do in Wildwood. Also, I can send flyers to my eBay customers with the details about this project.

I am also impressed with the number of contacts already made. I am confident that this will be a success.

And I would like to thank Matt for listening to the rambling thoughts of an oddball :D .

Thank you,

Glad to have you aboard Frank! Is anyone going to the National? We would miss a huge oppourunity if we did not have some reresentation there. I can not go, but we need to have someone handing out flyers. If wireless internet is in the area, have someone with a laptop showing people The Bench, the MySpace and official project home pages.

Tim,

One comment and one suggestion. I checked the myspace page and I noticed a typo - looks like your fingers got too fast when you typed media (spelled mdeia on the page)

Are you going to run some type of tally or checklist of what you/we have, and what is needed? I think something on the main page would be a great idea to remind everyone about the project everytime they log in as well as give it visibility to the new people as they join...

To answer your previous questiona and these here. I am trying to message Matt about his address and how he wants to handle that. He is having modem problems and is not here long or often lately.

I will fix the typo, thanks!

Between Matt and I, I would like to think we will have a checklist going of what we need. Something on the main page here on the Bench or the Myspace page? The MySpace page and official project site page will be up until we present a check to The V foundation.

I know I plan on attending the National this year and there are usually a handful of other Benchies that go as well each year.

Matt,

Since donations are likely from unknown sources, perhaps a P.O. Box would be wiser than your street address. They run $35 for six months. If need be, I could help a little with that expense.

Giving out your address on a one to one basis with traders/buyers/sellers is one thing. Having it posted on the net is another. For every person willing to give to a charitable cause, there is another who's only charity is themselves. Please make your decision carefully.

Im not sure if this was talked about or not, but when these cards get on Ebay as lots, if someone wants to buy them then we should all talk about it because then we could get them cheap. If 10 members start to bid on a lot, well then it is kinda a waste as the other 9 could use that money to buy other lots. Just a thought!

Very good point. For those that may plan on purchasing lots off of an auction site they should maybe give a head's up type thread in the Card Talk section, or have a running thread for that purpose. That would eliminate a lot of bidding up another member's winning price.

We will also have a posted wantlist once we have a nice % of the set.

If UD releases the set staggered thru out the year instead of everything available from the onset. I think it will be 1-1,000 in X product and 1,001-2000 in Y product etc.

With the wantlist posted it will save members from buying lots of cards we really don't need. I'm not saying we don't want dupes, but it doesn't make sense to buy 100 card lot for 2 cards we need (unless it's the last 2 from a given run)

More Press! This is from Sports Collectors Digest bi-weekly news letter. If you are interested, PM me and I will e-mail the PDF file.

Website hopes to build Yankee Stadium set for charity
When Upper Deck announced earlier this month that it would be producing a
6,500-card insert set to commemorate the history of Yankee Stadium, there were
bound to be a few ambitious collectors who would attempt to pursue every card on a
very lengthy checklist.
One such pursuit will actually be a group effort by the regulars who frequent the
trading boards on the website www.thebenchtrading.com. The website, known by
regulars as “The Bench,” will be relying on its visitors to band together to assemble
one of the first “complete sets” of the new UD product. When that mission is accomplished,
the plan is to auction the cards off together through Sotheby’s with the proceeds
going to the V Foundation for cancer research. The effort has been dubbed
“fighting cancer one card at a time.”
“This is a monster set, a historical set – not only for baseball, but for pop culture
and American sports in general. And there will be a lot of Yankee fans out there who
will probably be interested in this,” said Tim Danielson, PR director for the website. “A
lot of our members collect sets from all the major manufacturers and enjoy the thrill of
the hunt – tracking down those last few cards. I’m sure a lot of them will be helping us
chase and hunt down those cards – which is part of the fun of collecting cards.”
The Yankee Stadium Legacy set will feature cards spotlighting every baseball game
ever played at Yankee Stadium in the past 85 seasons, along with some of the most
memorable non-baseball events, including heavyweight title fights.
Danielson noted The Bench has more than 6,000 members and that some of the
collectors were already contemplating chasing the set on their own. Some may still
be doing so, but they have also been willing to supply cards to the group effort.
Perhaps the biggest gray area at the moment, according to Danielsen, is whether
the “complete set” the group is assembling will include the 42 game-used memorabilia
cards (bats and jerseys) that will include cards featuring Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig,
Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Berra, Reggie Jackson, Derek Jeter and others. “That might be
icing on the cake, if we get any of those,” he said. “ We’re hoping the national publicity
we’re starting to get rolling in will get people not only on our site donating cards, but
(collectors) at shops around the country.”

There is already so much positive publicity, this is definitely going to be a success!

Is it alright to post the blue charity drive banner on our page? Or is there another one we can use for that purpose.

I know this was discussed a while back, but will there be an effort to buy a huge lot of these on Ebay? Or will this be a total donation from members and a "fill in the holes" effort later?

The reason I am asking is that I would be willing to donate some money towards an Ebay auction instead of competing with others on auctions. Forgive me if this has been previously discussed, just looking for some clarity.

Thanks,

todd

As of right now we are playing it by ear. We will wait and see how the donations go and see how many gaps that leaves us for the future.

Busted my first box of UD in YEARS and pulled 4. Please check these off as they will be on the way this weekend: 6202 6152 6177 6227 - one Clemens, one Paul O'Neill and 2 Andy Pettites. I have to say that at 4 cards per box this is going to be a very tough task. I will send more if I can pick them up in trade or at card shows.

Just checked UD's site. They finally uploaded the complete checklist of the set. 6668 is the final count.

http://sports.upperdeck.com/collectorszone/cardsethome.aspx?q=6&sid=49192

EDIT: Just checked the numbers, DiMaggio is #1 with 225 cards, Jeter, Ruth, and a few others have 175 each.

Good article about the set. Too bad I have not been able to contact anyone at Beckett so they could throw us a bone.

http://www.beckett.com/estore/news/?eskin=beckett&a=9371&s=1

Tim

Anybody got an interpretation of this part of the article?:

"In addition to the basic set building nature of the release, Upper Deck also plans to interject an array of game-used and buyback YSL material into its upcoming 2008 Spectrum release.

These highly short printed game-used memorabilia cards will first appear in Spectrum, due out mid-April, and then be randomly inserted into every product thereafter.

In total 42 different Yankee greats, including Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Berra, Reggie Jackson and current Yankees Jorge Posada, Robinson Cano and Derek Jeter will be featured on either game-used bat or jersey cards."

Does this mean we've got to come up with these "highly short printed" cards to complete the set?

We will consider it a complete set with just the base (non-GU). While a Master set would be nice, I really do not see people just up and donating the GU cards.

I am a little suprised but at the same time glad to see they did not put in like 50 Rickey Hnederson cards in the 80's block.

Hi, I'm Big A from BigACards.com. Some of the members of my site were talking about this charity drive. I was wondering if we could help you guys out. I'd like to start collecting and sending cards to The Bench from Big A's.
I was wondering who to talk to about this partnership. Also in working together on bad traders. If you could, PM me here or email me at: NashVillain85@yahoo.com.

BD759 - As you can see, we already have a banner made promoting the Bench Charity Drive.

Before folks pile on, let's nip this in the bud. Do you really understand what you're undertaking, looking to complete a 6500-card insert set, spread out over a dozen or so different UD releases this year, where the average card probably books $4-$8?

If so, I wish you the best with it. Put a WTTF post in the Baseball Wants section and have at it.

Someone just hooked me up with a box of YSL cards. It's a 100 card box (numbered 1 to 100). Are they included in this set? or are they something completely different? They look the same except they're blue where the gold trim is in the other cards.

They are something completely different. They are a totally seperate stand alone set, unrelated to the set we are going after. Not only is the trim border a different color, I believe those cards do not have the codes on the back that you can enter on UD's website. It is the watered down, low-calorie, "light" version of the big one. You can pick them up on Beckett or most card shops for $19.95

If you are purchasing lots off of E-Bay to help build this set, watch out for sellers that are breaking up the 100 card box set, and selling them as lots or singles. Be sure to check the description of the cards if there is no picture available, they will all be # at 100 or less. If there is a decent picture the cards have a blue border instead of the original brown tones.

I am aware of that, but while you'd like to think positive to complete the set, you also have to think realistically. There are just too many people going after this set including members from this site. Im not complaining about people keeping them since I would probably keep any Guidry I got.

Not sure what else you want me to say here, as of right now we are going for the whole set. The whole thing has not even been released yet:) When we first started this I said up front that this would be at least a 14-18 month undertaking. The charity will benfit more from a completed set sale and I don't see why time should have to be a factor.

We WILL finish this set. Taliasen is doing a great job getting our cause publicized on the net and there are so many traders donating that there is no doubt in my mind that we will get it done. It will take at least until next year due to the cards being released in 09 UD Series 1. We've been at this for just a couple of months and we already have more that 1/3 of the set.

Thanks,

The novelty of the complete set will die a little by then since they have stated the first individual who completes the set will get a "fantasy experience to Yankee Stadium"
I am not trying to kill anything here, Im just questioning, and am trying to encourage others to give their cards to this amazing cards rather than trying to trade it. As it was said in the beginning of this thread, and I will quote Frank: " For every person willing to give to a charitable cause, there is another who's only charity is themselves. We are not going for the the fantasy experience to Yankee Stadium, any of the game tickets/trips or other prizes. I have already told Chris from UD so. In fact, any prizes we have already received, the special commerative Yankee Jersey and the limited edition commerative Yankee Stadium Legacy original framed artwork both from UD and any autographed pictures that Tuff Stuff may donate will all be turned around and awarded to top donators from The Bench. I hope, through all of our hard work and marketing we already have out there, that no one thinks that we are doing this for our profit/benefit or a trip to Yankee stadium. There is a MUCH bigger picture and larger cuase out there then just baseball cards or even any legacy a historic building may have. It is that very cause that we hope will make people more inclined to donate. Some of us have a personal and vested inrterest in helping our cause. I appreaciate your opinions and you are entitled to them. Several of us though are still very excited about the charity drive and are trying to spread a positive/upbeat attitude toward it. Because I have a personal stake in the cause (my father has terminal brain cancer), I will do anything and everything in my power to see this project be a completed success.

Nice post. Every time I pull one of these there is a little voice in the back of my head that says, "you could trade it for something you need on another site and no one would know". Then my conscious kicks in and I pretend that I'm having to tell my Mom that my Joey Cora needlist is more important that helping find a cure to a disease that has claimed half her family. I guess that is what your conscious is for.

We actually have a flier you can print off and take to him if you think it will help.

I guess I am just looking at our efforts differently. I am more of a "glass half full" rather than a "glass half empty" type of guy. Or at least in this case, it is not that do not have 75% of the set complete so far, but that we DO have 25% of the set complete after only 5 months!

First, I would like to thank bear0555. He brought this to my attention, and perhaps I would have noticed while packing, but a good chance I would have missed the fact.

I recently sold a Red Hot Rookie #9 to Brad Ziegler. (He seems to be buying up all his Red Hot Rookies). Along with the official flyer, I sent a little note. After congrats on a great rookie season, I mentioned that UD will issue cards next season for this set. I asked if he would circulate the flyer among his teammates.
Don't know his extent into cards, or if he'll pass the word around, but it 'll be interesting to see if he gets back to either me, or here at the Bench.
