I tried but the site does not seem to be up and running, yet. The countdown clock is gone, but there is no where to log in or enter a code.

At least it isn't just me, good ole Topps at it again. Brings back memories of my eTopps days.

Hi everybody:

I am trying to get on this site...the "timer" is gone but all I get is the screen. There is no place to enter codes.

Is it not up yet or am I missing something?

Thanks!

Awesome!! Do they say that they will send the cards to you for free or will you have to pay for them to get sent like etopps?

You input your code, and you are randomly awarded a past-issue card. Like eTopps, you need to pay shipping to have your .05c common mailed to you.

Another scam by the card companies to rip off the collectors. Way to go Topps!!

What's weird is that if you bring up the site in Firefox, you do not have the option to register or enter codes.

Seems to work in IE, but slow.

I haven't been successful yet but the understanding is that the card is unlocked, you know what it is, and you can choose to get it sent to you. Obviously, a 1992 Topps of Scott Erickson isn't likely going to be physically redeemed but I would be interested in anything older than 1980!

Condition could be a mystery.

I don't think it's a scam (not yet). It could be interesting!

It's running slow, because it's the first day. But it was trying to work and register in Firefox.

And no, Shepherd, you don't know what it is until you've entered the code.

I've gotten past the registration, HTA Hobby Shop entry (skipped) and was prompted for a code but the system chokes at this point. The website is probably getting bombarded.

Shep,
When you unlock your code, you see what you "won" then can choose whether or not to physically obtain the card. It looks like you can also trade redeemed cards amongst members.

It also looks like every card you enter also gives you an entry into a second chance drawing. I didn't get far enough into the site before it crapped out on me to get anymore info on the drawing.

The website is a JOKE! Topps knew for months that this thing was going to launch today. 1. They are closed due to the Holiday. 2. They waited until 12 CST because of "West coast participants" 3. The web site is a JOKE! Hey, if facebook, my space, eBay, The Bench etc can have hundreds and thousands of people logging onto their sites simultaneously, then Topps sure should be able to. I mean, there are a million of these cards- at the most and all of them haven't been given out yet! I'd bet the most there could be at any given time is a few thousand people trying to log in.....and what happens? nothing! VERY slowly nothing! After 2 hrs of trying I unlocked 2 1987 cards. Unreal! I guess the first card will cost close to 2 dollars to send, each card after that is around .50 I did see a few 56's 58's and mid 70's cards were unlocked but the majority of cards were 1987's and 2005's. Topps really blew this promotion!

I've been somewhat patient and able to unlock 7... one from the 60s - 1965 Ed Kirkpatrick, one from the 70s - 1972 Cleo James (a cub!), one from '87 and the rest from this decade, including a Pujols from '03. Still very buggy, but I'm patiently working through it and having fun. It's like sllllllloooooowly opening a single card pack. Kind of fun!

Edit - BTW, when the site gets better, I'll trade any of you for Cubs you may get!

Give it time guys, just go back later and log in your codes if it's not working right now.

For those of you complaining about the cards and calling it a scam I just don't understand why the fuss? Do you really expect every code to be something amazing? If so then I would not like to be around you when you open up baseball boxes, play a lottery ticket or get stuck behind a red light. Life is too short to be negative about the little things:D

Yea, I don't expect anything big - but the chance is there. I'd just like to register to get one in though! That's the problem, we're used to ripping packs, not waiting for websites! Ahhh that instant gratification......

I saw briefly that I got a 1985 Chris Speier and then it quit on my 2nd redemption. I can't get the website to display anything (all the kids are back from school and flooded the site).

While viewing the 85 Speier (in full color at least - nice!), I noticed it said "you have qty 1 of this card". Does that imply there are multiple copies of cards? If so, it makes the contest much less attractive. Topps isn't likely to pass out mulitples of '52 Mantle. I wonder if they have inserts going, too.

Keep posting your hits here - it's interesting even if it is a common from 1988 Topps!

One thing I can't believe is that people are paying $1.00 per game card on EvilBay! That being said, I wouldn't sell mine for $1.00 - the opportunity is too interesting.

In theory, so long as there aren't multiple variations of the 80s-current commons, if you have 50-60 of these game cards then you should get "one from each year"... pretty good odds on something interesting when you consider the 50s, 60s and early 70s.

The big question... condition! Are these going to be from the archives or from the secondary market.

Still fun, no matter.

Got them all unlocked. I hit a stretch where it went pretty quickly. The next hurdle is to get on "my collection" so I can get a list together.

I got cards from the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's. Did get the HR Leader Card from 1980.

loftheb

tribefan - it's the million card giveaway. If you had one of every topps set from '51 on, you'd only end up with, like, 35,000 cards. There's probably going to be much more stuff from the 80s on up. The fact that I've been able to snag 2/8 pre-'80s cards is nice, plus... it is just fun being able to reminice about all of the old cards...

With it running so slowly, why not just wait a few days and do it then? You're still going to get the same card for your code. It's obvious that Topps' planning for the launch of this site is as good as its customer service - abysmal. I love the fact that they waited to launch it on a holiday when more people are home from work or school and resulting in even more traffic to the site. Good luck!

That's great! I was wondering if inserts, AUTO and GU would be included.

This is a clever promotion (difficult to criticize it, really)!

It's harmless for those who's hits aren't worth the cost to obtain the cards... and great for the few who do get hits!

Cant say I will be redeeming any of these. Will make them available for trade just for the heck of it to see what I can do. Never know how you might be able to help someone complete a set.

Thanks,

You did very well. I have to agree with this being a great promotion. I got nothing of real value but it was harmless fun looking them up. I think Topps did this one right. I would certainly be willing to trade other inserts for unredeemed giveaway cards just for the fun of it.

1987 Pete Rose (okay)

i have 8 cards.....and i entered the first 5 with no problems. the last three said something like: invalid card............this card has already been redeemed.
the problem is: they could not have already been redeemed as i pulled these from packs so no-one else could have redeemed them. funny that this happened with my last three codes.
i then checked my account and it just shows the first 5 cards.

I've done halfway decent - 2 from the 50's (including a '53 Ed Yuhas - a Pitcher on the Cardinals), 5 from the 60's, 7 from '72 - including 2 Cubs - and the rest from the 80s to today. I had about 35 to enter. I'm trying to use the new ones to put together an '87 topps Cubs team set. Would probably ship that one back to myself.

I don't think it's a scam. If you don't want the card, you don't have to pay to have it shipped. You get a free chance at a card that could be valuable. If you do want it, you can pay to get it. I think it's a great promotion!

I agree. While I am not a fan of Topps and their customer service, I think it's a great promotion. It doesn't influence my decision on whether or not to buy 2010 Topps packs/boxes, but it is an interesting chase product if I do buy any packs/boxes. Anyone who complains about the promotion (other than the shoddy planning and execution of the website) had unrealistic expectations. How could you not expect the majority of cards to be from 1986 on? It only makes sense that the cards given away would be proportional to print runs. Good luck to everyone and just appreciate the fact that you have a shot at getting some nice vintage cards.

Yeah, I haven't bought any 2010 products yet, but I like seeing who is getting what. Keep posting them, guys.

BTW, is there a spot on the Topps site where you can see what has been redeemed so far? I looked around for a minute, but didn't see a spot for that.

The only search I could find is to click on "propose trade" and then it provides a search where you can type "Mantle" and see which ones are already redeemed. If you type "Yount" you will see that there are multiple redemptions from the newer sets (late 80s / early 90s).

You can enter just the year and get all the cards for a set, too.

Of course, this option probably only works if you have a redeemed card in your collection. If you haven't redeemed one yet, you might not have access to what I'm seeing.

You do need to redeem something then go to trade and search as stated before. I did a Mantle search just for fun.

All mine came from the retail packs.

Cool! Are the odds the same as hobby (1:6)?

I've purchased two blasters and about a dozen packs and ended up with six, slightly better than the odds.

People are nuts. While I think this is a great promotion and I'm very interested in these cards, I can't believe what people are paying for these codes.

There's an auction of 21 game cards and the bid on Ebay is at $56 with 40 minutes left!

It's fun, but not $3-per-pop fun!

I went a picked a jumbo pack and a retail pack and got a code in each. I got pretty lucky with my cards too:

Ty Cline 1966
Ty Cline / Outfield / Chicago Cubs

Mike Ryan 1967
Mike Ryan / Catcher / Boston Red Sox

Not too shabby - entered two more and ended up with a $20 1962 Gil Hodges (Mets). I didn't expect anything over $10 from this promotion, so I'm pleasantly surprised so far.

I got this one just now
Adam Lind 2009
Adam Lind/ Outfielder/ Toronto Blue Jays
But when it came up, it showed a card with him swinging a bat, nothing I've ever seen before in 2009 topps.. any idea what it is? Just showed a picture of him attempting to swing a bat with a blue background, below it is a white area for his name, and then a white box that is shaped like a ticket stub or razor blade.

I had a lot of vintage today (if you count 4 1975 cards as vintage) as well - best one was a $25 1967 Jim "Mudcat" Grant.

One word...GAMBLING.

The CHANCE to redeem a Pete Rose Rookie or a vintage 1956 Jackie Robinson card. It's driving the demand now I would assume.

I'd say it's no different than opening packs, other than with packs, you at least know the year you are getting. Imagine opening super packs that contain all the different Topps cards from 1951-2010! This is that, just one card at a time, w/o the wax & gum!

The more I see what's being redeemed, the more I think the codes are not assigned ahead of time. Right now, everything being redeemed is from the '50's (if you have any codes, enter them right now!) The site gives recently redeemed cards, and earlier there were all from the 1980 timeframe. I waited a little and suddenly there were all from the '50's, so I entered the three I hadn't entered yet. Sure enough, all three were from the '50's (1 from 1953 and 2 from 1955).

That is interesting - thanks for the heads up. It explains why I seemed to have a run of 60s and 70s when I did it - didn't really seem random at all. It also probably answers my biggest concern with this: as soon as they admit the Mantle is pulled, it's over for them. Demand will drop. So how will they handle it? My guess is send a press release to Beckett after Series 2 comes out that says "Xxx,xxx cards have been redeemed, but the '52 Mantle is still waiting to be redeemed! Get your Series 2 boxes now!"
