I'm new to this forum but I am not new to card collecting. Today, I became interested in an obscure player (for uninteresting reasons, I won't go in to). The player is Ken Robinson (AKA Kenny Robinson, AKA Kenneth Robinson).
Ken Robinson spent many years playing in farm teams until 1995. In 1995 he threw 38 games for the Blue Jays. Robinson had many farm league ball cards and, in 1996, he was issued his first MLB cards. According to Beckett's, here's a list of all his cards (minor and major league):
1991 Medicine Hat Blue Jays ProCards #4099 Ken Robinson
1992 Myrtle Beach Hurricanes Fleer/ProCards #2196 Ken Robinson
1993 Hagerstown Suns Classic/Best #23 Ken Robinson
1993 Hagerstown Suns Fleer/ProCards #1879 Ken Robinson
1994 Hagerstown Suns Classic #20 Ken Robinson
1994 Hagerstown Suns Fleer/ProCards #2728 Ken Robinson
1995 Syracuse Chiefs Team Issue #21 Ken Robinson
1996 Fleer #282 Ken Robinson
1996 Fleer Tiffany #282 Ken Robinson
1996 Syracuse Chiefs Team Issue #25 Ken Robinson
1997 Syracuse Sky Chiefs Best #20 Ken Robinson
Now, according to Beckett's, Robinson has no rookie card. How can that be? Doesn't the 1996 Fleer qualify as his first MLB card? So, why isn't the 1996 Fleer his rookie card?
Ken Robinson died tragically in February 1999 when he was riding shotgun in a car driven by a pickled teamate. He was scheduled to play for the new expansion team, Diamondbacks, in Spring of 1999.
