The PSA Goudey Adventure

Prices are way up

I took some time off from collecting due to time restraints. Started browsing ebay recently and man graded prices are UP UP UP.

I kept a spreadsheet with average sale prices on the cards I was looking to acquire. The goudey's in PSA 4 could be had for under $20 now I see them go for $30 and above. But the real increase is in graded RC's. I'll use 2 examples 2 years ago a PSA 8 Bird/Johson RC sold for $130 today $300+, and a Gretzky RC in PSA 8 2 years ago sold around $350 today $500+

DAMN it I should have pulled the trigger back then, on the bright side most of the graded RC's I already have also have gone way up in sale price.

I'm guessing that is a sign that the economy at large has improved somewhat over the past few years. I know locally the economy has improved somewhat during the past few years.

I believe it has more to do with the current state of the hobby. Today's cards do not hold their value compared to cards of established/retired players.

Anyone can ask any price on eBay doesn't mean they will get that price. Cards are way out of hand by the card companies and the Hobby is all about "Give me the Money" Even sending your cards out to be graded cost too much therefore many collectors like myself don't do it thus the hobby is suffering from too high prices, high grading cost, and card companies like Topps pricing the cards out of reach of the average collectors, meaning the kids.

The prices I'm quoting are completed sold auctions. I know that ebay now has tons of stuff at inflated prices because for most sellers the first 50 listings are free. Makes weeding thru the items even harder.

Decent examples of those cards should go up, same with the Montana rookie. They are fairly iconic cards. You think of great cards from the late 70's/early 80's, the few years before a lot of average collectors started tucking away sealed cases, and you think of the Gretzky, Bird/Johnson, Jordan, Sweetness, Montana, maybe Marino/Elway/Rice or Mario Lemieux. Baseball always had a higher print run than the other sports, so we don't see it as much there. There is always very strong demand for the cards you mentioned. Do you see similar price increases for more transient players, or guys a tier below? Guys like Messier, Barkley, Rickey Henderson, Eddie Murray, Dawson, Pippen, Isaiah Thomas, Dumars, Steve Largent, Marcus Allen, Dominique,?
