History

by valediction on 12-10-2014 at 02:08 PM
One of the more enjoyable aspects of the hobby for me is thinking about the history of some of the items in my collection. With the ups and downs in the hobby I've enjoyed since 1981, it's always amazing to think about what might have happened. When I was younger, it went one way. I'd pick up a card and think about how it got to that point in time. I bought a beautiful 1959 Topps Frank Robinson when I was a teenager. I'd realize that most likely it was pulled from a penny or nickel pack by a kid

They ruined the hobby!

by valediction on 10-28-2014 at 03:10 PM
That's a refrain I hear time and again. Topps is ruining it because they are the only licensed card maker, before that there were too many card makers making too many products. Products had too many parallels, they were too hard to find, packs were getting too expensive. I've been hearing it since at least 1989. WAKE UP PEOPLE! The hobby is only ruined if YOU let it be ruined for you. Things change, that's how life goes. Too many people focus on the good parts of the past and ignore the bad parts,

Why I don't build sets

by valediction on 02-13-2014 at 07:03 PM
When I started collecting cards, I was all about trying to complete the sets. The hobby was a LOT different then, no internet, no SCD, Tuff Stuff, Baseball Cards Magazine, etc. (Technically SCD and probably BBC Magazine were around, but I wasn't aware of them) That's really all there was for a ten or eleven year old to do, buy packs and add them together. Then I saw baseball Cards Magazine in the grocery store, and saw they had baseball card shows. Then in a few years I started working summer jobs.

Remember all the oddball issues?

by valediction on 02-09-2014 at 11:28 PM
I was continuing my search for the end of the internet the other day and I browsed into a fellow collector's blog. There were multiple entries on one of the parts of the hobby I miss most. Oddball issues. Cards that came on Twinkie boxes, Milk Duds packages, cereal boxes, Jell-O boxes, from Burger King or McDonald's, in potato chips, in hot dogs, coins and cups from convenience stores, 'cards' printed in newspapers, cards from shopping malls, macaroni and cheese boxes, ice cream, soda pop, and

You call that an AUTOGRAPH?

by valediction on 09-14-2013 at 02:50 PM
I was reading the forums here this morning when I happened upon this thread. It got me to thinking about the number of times I've seen threads or comments in threads about the aesthetic quality of players autographs today vs those from generations past. Phrases I hear often include "they just don't care" "they don't take pride in their autographs." Personally, I think that is a bit harsh. There are several reasons I can think of for declining quality.

First,
