Interesting note in this issue - card #7 is in the set.... it was previously retired for Mickey Mantle - curious????

Topps Series 1 is the first installment for the year. The cards have a different design this year. The front is glossy as well as the reverse. The cards will be condition sensitive because the photos are full bleed and cover the entire card - be careful should you decide to have one or more graded.

I am pleased that I received 89% of the base set with no duplicates. I did not get any SP's or variations to the best of my knowledge -- all of my cards had the same microprint number on the reverse 021730.

As in the past, this is a must for the Topps set builder. One should be able to complete the base set with 2 hobby boxes with numerous cards left over for trading. I will say that whoever decides to build the gold parallel or the black parallel - kudos, there will be a substantial hill to climb on either one of those builds!!! I am making the assumption that there are other parallels - i.e. pink, cammo, as in the past, but I have not seen one -- could very easily be wrong.

The number of inserts is good and the quality of the inserts is strong. In some boxes, one will receive a manufactured relic - I have seen 2 different kinds on the 'bay!

Overall grade A+

Go buy several boxes and send the Rays inserts to me!

Plus the variations....were not even one per case! Topps started using card 7 probably because it was to confusing to collectors. Best regards, David PS my favorite cards were the silver packs that we're given by the hobby stores....one for a regular topps box and two for the jumbo boxes.

I would love to have the 30th anniversary cards but the only Rays insert I have is Longoria JRD. I can check and see if I have any base if you need some of them.

Thanks! Personally, once that a number is 'retired' -- it should stay that way - just my opinion and we all know what that is worth!!!

I was just getting ready to post my questions when I read your post, thanks. I decided to put together this base set because of the Cubs winning the WS and I figured there would be a lot of Cub stuff in there. First set I put together since 1992. So if I read correctly, # to 66 and black under name is black parallel; number with 0721/2017 is gold parallel; and the other ones I got with Series 1 in silver under name is Foil?
I also was surprised to see the #7 card. I also thought Topps decided to retire it "FOR GOOD", didn't know there was an agreement with the Mantle estate but also understand why new set builders might be confused.

Question is anyone is listing - I pulled a clear variation 338 Alcides Escobar KC Royals. The checklist I am using from Topps on line does not list it. Is it possible this was a substitute for some other one?
