What I am enjoying is that everything is still up for grabs, it is what keeps the conversation going. Scherzer throws a CG win yesterday for the Nats, have to consider him for CY in the NL.
He will finish the season as a DH and then have the surgery. He should be ready to hit by the beginning of next season but won't be ready to pitch until later if ever.

I like Yelich as NL MVP - getting into the playoffs would be a nice bump to that candidacy!

That is a big investment in a DH......Especially since they already have one in Pujols. For the $$$ they paid, have to assume they would rather have the starting pitcher! If he plays the balance of the year, still will have trouble beating out the boys from the bronx.

The Pujols contract is the reason why the Angels are never good. He is a terrible player at this point.

Still better than Chris Davis!!!! But yeah, the Angels needed to contend in the first couple years of that contract, now it is an anchor....

Almost want to throw Trout in the MVP discussion - but feels like he could be there every year, regardless. Kind of like LeBron in the NBA.

Haha anyone is better than Chris Davis. Wow what a waste.

Trout is always in the MVP discussion. I think if he hadn't gotten injured this year he would have won it. His numbers are still really good despite that but I think too many other guys are having really good years on contending teams.

Cannot argue that discussion point at all. Looking at Cy Young....Degrom is 8-9, with a 1.71 ERA. Is that worthy of an award..I say no, but I am sure the metrics fans out there will tell me why I am wrong. Nola looks like he has given up trying to haul all of Gabe Kaplers mistakes through the year.

It's not deGrom's fault his team sucks and gives him no run support. Should he be penalized for that? A pitcher's job is to not give up runs. He does it better than anyone based on that incredible ERA. He deserves the Cy Young.

I disagree..wins have to matter, at least a bit. Based on said logic - career record of 88-155, ERA of 1.91 -- HOF worthy? Nola's ERA in Philly is less than a run higher than DeGrom's, team is equally as crappy and he has a winning record. Same could be said for Scherzer in DC.

And I believe there have been games where DeGrom got run support, but gave up more runs in those games. Almost like he pitches better when he gets no run support. He has had an outstanding year, no question about it, just not award worthy. Participation trophies for everyone is not the way to do things.

So if a pitcher pitches a complete game every outing and loses every game 1-0 he should not win the Cy Young vs. someone who pitches 6 innings every outing and gives up 3 runs and record is 10-10 due to run support? ERA is the most important stat for a pitcher. It's obvious who the better pitcher is in that scenario.

So back to deGrom, his W/L record isn't great obviously but he hasn't given up more than 3 runs in a start in 26 straight outings which has never been done before. That is unreal. You cannot ask for anything better from a starting pitcher.

Then why not just give it to the guy who leads the league in ERA every year?

There is more to it than just ERA, but that is the most important stat for a pitcher. Not often does a pitcher have as low of an ERA as deGrom does this year. Nola and Scherzer are both having great years themselves, but deGrom has been the best and most consistent of the three.

Scherzer had a rough outing tonight. Only went 4 innings and gave up 6 earned runs.

Downside is that one of DeGroms own teammates (Wheeler) has a lower ERA than him this month and a better record... And deGrom gave up 3 runs in his last start, and his offense got him 3 back so he got a ND instead of a loss. The sabrmetrics have completely changed the way players are analyzed. Some are good - BABIP, that is real and can be measured. WAR, seems made up to me - how do you truly measure one players Win value v. another player? Is Mike Trout better than Andrew Benintendi..yes. How much better, I don't know. And based on that - do we just give the MVP every year to the highest perceived WAR?
