IIRC, this is not a new practice. The Indians and others did it some years ago. I think many teams try to do it, but the young stars are not always agreeable (read Mookie Betts)).

That has to be the way to go in MLB - lock up your stars/potential stars with a raise prior to arbitration. the Phillies did it with Nola, and I thought it was a great move.
On small trades I use PWE but'll use a bubble mailer if you ask.

Very true - it isn't uncommon. I think it is a smart move. Not every one will pay off, but the potential is there. What do they say in the NFL, having a talented young quarterback locked in on the rookie deal is the most beneficial thing to giving you cap flexibility to build your team elsewhere - just ask the Eagles how it is working out for them so far.

bigger news is the Scooter Gennett injury coming out of spring training, huge gut punch for Cincinnati.

Can't wait for the season to kick off!!!

Haven't seen the numbers yet, but heard that DeGrom just got his extension.

Which scares me to death, since he is the ace on my fantasy staff.......coming off a historic season, getting a huge contract...just crossing fingers!!

Reports are it is a five year $ 137.5 mil deal with a player option in 2022 and a team option in 2024, also full no trade.
Glad they wrapped him up. While some were saying there was no rush as they had him under control for another two years, why jerk around your star?

Exactly - keep the big name happy! I am hearing more and more that guys are taking these deals because they are unsure what will be happening with free agency after the next CBA negotiations.

Curious as to what will happen with guys like Torres, Judge, Acuna, Albies, Soto, etc.

Numbers never lie....but they don't always tell the truth or the whole story!!!! Have found that when pushed, numbers can say just about anything you want them to.

With that said...8 years/$100 million -- not sure how those numbers add up to what Acuna Jr. are worth!!!! That feels like at least a $100 million discount.......

I despise statistics with a passion!!!! That was the one high school/college course that I could never wrap my brain around..well that and philosophy - if a tree falls in the woods, it makes a sound, I don't care what argument you have against it, it makes a sound!!!!!!!

I know it isn't quoted verbatim, but there is a line in Mr. Baseball, when Sellecks character, while arguing against being traded says - but I led the league in 9th inning doubles when the team was trailing. There is a statistic for EVERYTHING if you want to make your case for positivity.

You are SO RIGHT, and I have been mocking it for years. "He has the best E.R.A. in day games played on natural surfaces on odd numbered Wednesdays in even numbered months in years when there are two blue moons and a Presidential election."
I'd love to sit in on some of the arbitrations when agents and team reps start pulling out various stats in favor of whatever their bargaining position may be!
