Went to a fantastic parade and memorial service in Oneonta this morning while visiting friends there. The service included a reading of the Gettysburg Address and General Order # 11 from General John A. Logan, which effectivley established Memorial Day (and about which I was unaware). There was much more to the service. It was excellent, and could serve as a template for services throughout the nation.
I hope we all take (took) some time this weekend to remember those who made the greatest sacrifice so that we may continue to enjoy the freedoms we have in our great country.

I retired last year after 24 years in the Army/Army National Guard. I did a one year long deployment to Afghanistan (2011-2012). Just doing my part for those that did theirs before me.

While we are always grateful to those who serve our country in the military, that is NOT what Memorial Day is about. I recommend that we learn the distinction between Memorial Day, Veteran's Day and Armed Forces Day.
