    Fair Pay to Play Act

New law passed in California that is in direct conflict with NCAA rules on paying players for their likeness (not picking on California here - several other states have this act waiting to be voted on, CA was just the first to pass it).

I am a little torn on this - I do believe that getting a scholarship is fair compensation for you playing a sport. But I also can understand when a kids picture is plastered up all over the campus and town as the drawing point for the college and the particular sport, I can see that argument.

I also know this is all about basketball/football. This isn't about a water polo player.

    My two big concerns:

1 - how are you going to stop a booster from giving a kid $1mm to do an autograph session at a car dealership or fast food joint - using that appearance as his "likeness".

2 - how comfortable is a kid going to be paying his own way to college, without the scholarship, with the hope that he gets "likeness money". Great for the Zion Williamsons of the world, but not so great for the 3 or 4 kids at the end of the bench.

This will almost certainly give the PAC-12 an advantage in recruiting, as they are the major conference that is affected by this ruling/law. It isn't set to be enacted for a a couple years, so plenty of time to debate and figure out details.

Interesting thoughts, Andy. It's definitely a slippery slope that most likely started when a video game company manufactured and marketed an NCAA football game using actual players' names and their college teams. Not unfair for the player to be compensated once that kind of stuff is going on, imo. I know you're a golf fan so think about how this could affect college golf. I really like the few college tournaments that Golf channel televises throughout the year; with the players sporting their college shirts and hats. Now the Titleists and Callaways of the world will be rushing to 'logo them up' for TV and they'll start looking like the NASCAR guys that the PGA golfers are resembling more and more and every year. How many shirt logos does a pro golfer need? As many as the TV camera will capture.......

I was watching a few shows and they were talking that all players in all sports be paid. That would kill college sports. Schools would have to cut scholarships and raise student fees to help pay for them. Even if all did not get paid, I could see linemen not give great blocks and tell that 5 mil. RB earn your money. State Gov. need to stay out of sports. Let the schools and the courts work it out.

I don't know all the details and haven't read through the entire law yet - but I don't think the money will be coming from the colleges, it will be coming from private enterprise, and that is where the sticking point is. If USC boosters can pay a kid a million bucks for an autograph signing, and Alabama boosters can't - gives an unfair recruiting advantage to USC.

Correct - also, North Carolina, South Carolina and New York. would be curious to see how dug in the NCAA is on this if they are willing to kick Duke and UNC out of March Madness and Clemson out of Football Final Four???

Latest news from the NCAA is that it sounds like they are opening their arms to Pay for Play and allowing athletes to benefit from their likeness being used. Should be interesting to see how long until it is instituted AND how long it takes for the boosters to make a mockery of it.

Pretty sure this is going to be nothing more than a rich get richer scenario....................NCAA may be wise to try and add some type of institutional cap to the amount each school is allowed to pay out to athletes.
