"The Holy Grail"

Finally finished with my latest art project. I decided to start a new series involving sports cards. Here's the theme: What is the one thing that most collectors strive to do? What is the overall gist of collecting? I used those questions to fuel the fire for this project. To me, the fun of collecting is taking unwanted cards in the collection and trading them for cards you desire.

SO.........

Here's the question I asked myself: If I could trade my no-good, worthless, late 1980's commons for the most popular, most expensive card of all time.....would I do it? SURE - WHO WOULDN'T!!! Obviously, finding someone to trade you a 1909 T-206 Honus Wagner for 997 common cards from 1985-1990 is not going to happen............................................ .......................but through the world of art, anything is possible.

Here's the breakdown:

(49) 1985 Topps
(83) 1986 Topps
(296) 1987 Topps {for frame only}
(86) 1988 Topps
(88) 1986 Fleer
(342) 1989 Fleer
(53) 1990 Score {for lettering and black line framing only}
997 TOTAL CARDS
(1) pair of scissors
(11) professional quality glue sticks
(41) Total Hours of Work Time
36" X 26" Total Dimensions
*And, only 1 HOFer was injured during this project (my apologies to the 1989 Fleer Eddie Murray - it was an accident)

And when I was finished, my "trade" looked like this:

That's pretty awesome, Mr.Carroll. Now, why is there an empty spot in Wagner's forehead? What are the dimensions of the Wagner? Good job!

The forehead is actually not empty - it is hard to see from those scans. It is actually a small exaggeration of the light source from the Wagner photo. I have attached a scan below of the forehead, along with some other pics of the piece. The total dimensions, frame included, are actually 36" X 26".

That truly is amazing.

Too bad you aren't taking orders. I'd love a Rice RC done up like that.

I have noticed that there are a ton of Graphic Designers that are taking orders on ebay, but I call them "cheaters." They have computer programs that compare pixels with the photographs you want with images that are available online. Then, they print those pictures on high quality paper and sell them from anywhere between $12.99-$19.99. To me, they are just not as meaningful as having the commons create the replica of the card.

Example:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Amazing-1953-Top...nots upported

I would take orders, but honestly I have no idea of what to charge for something like that. I do have something in the works to have a printshop in Tupelo run 100 serial numbered prints of the Wagner (this is the 100th anniversary of the card, and I already have 7 pre-sold. I also have plans to complete a '52 Topps Mantle, and then a Nagurski and Namath in football. I am contemplating the basketball versions: Lew Alcindor, George Mikan, Michael Jordan? I will also go the hockey route, but I truly do not know much about the history of basketball or hockey cards.

Thanks again for the kind words!
