One of the oddest ideas by Topps to try to spark interest in basketball cards was this 1981-82 set. They put out a national issue which came with either a East (like the one pictured above) , Midwest or West subset depending on what region you lived in. They did the same thing with Hockey that year as well although they only did an East and West for that issue.. In the early 80s it was no easy task to come up with the regions that were not where you lived!

The 2 other "ideas" Topps came up with to spur interest in basketball cards was the large postcard sized 1976-77 set and the tri panel 1980-81 set with all the variations. The 1980-81 was the worst idea they had. After the above1981-82 set Topps discontinued producing basketball cards until the Shaq craze of 1992-93.

Still have another 30 or so to lay the cash out for, but just grabbed another batch of 1972 hi #'s that the LCS has on layaway for me. Putting a huge dent in my wantlists - and they are in amazing shape. A few dinged corners here and there, but no creases, no diamond cuts, etc. It is no wonder that is where my allowance goes every month!
