How to ship larger items-8x10,balls,etc.

Hi,
I have collected autos thru the mail for a while,I am wanting to move up,like 8x10's magazines,balls and novilty items.Please let me know how most of you send such items,without damage and returned safely.Are they protectors for these items.Also info on return items,and do you write ahead of time,or just send them.Thanks
