anyone notice how more than 80% showed are pre 1980...

I think that's because the majority of pre-1980 cards aren't action shots, so those that have great action on them are very memorable. Newer cards are mostly action shots, so it's harder to stand out.

I always like that all three were AS outfielder, even though they would not have all played at the same time in the same outfield likely. Those 79 and 80 sets had some decent action shots too, but the bulk of the set were still poses and portraits. Moving into the 80s, the action shots became more common and unless they were really neat, lost their special status for me.

Great topic! I've always liked the 78 Topps Len Randle card. If you look closely, his hand (by the bag) is covered in sand. Almost looks like he doesn't have a hand. Strange, but I look for that every time I see that card!

Love this 1987 Classic Andre Dawson. I think this is him being hit in the head by Eric Show.

And there are some great shots from the Hideki Matsui Home Run set:

I really wish someone would revive the Sportflics idea, or the hologram feature where they actually showed some action, not just useless portrait shots of players in realy bad quality.

And while staged, I really like this shot

This is my favorite baseball card of all time and also happens to be a unique action shot of Roberto Clemente.

For you actions shot fans... I bought a box of 2012 Panini Gridiron for the kids and noticed that every base card of the veterans was a landscape action shot with many really unique poses and angles... it's clear as you go through the set that it's different. For whatever reason, every RC is a boring portrait shot.

Though the action shot was only a part of the 1956 cards, the action shots are really interesting. I like these two because you don't think of Killebrew as a defensive player (looks like he bobbled the ball even if it is foul) and Gomez is a pitcher and he's shown getting thrown out at first base. For some reason some of the uniforms have no team identification on them - see Hank Aaron card and the baserunner on the Joe Collins card. It's also fun seeing which peripheral players are involved in the action - on the Bob Kennedy card he's sliding into home (in a plain uniform) and Yogi Berra is the catcher tagging him out.
